Hawarden Regional Healthcare to Transition Emergency Department Coverage to Rural Physicians Group
The Hawarden Regional Healthcare (HRH) Board of Directors has made the thoughtful decision to transition emergency department coverage to Rural Physicians Group (RPG), effective December 30, 2025.
This decision was not made lightly, nor is it a reflection on the dedication of HRH’s current emergency providers. HRH is deeply grateful for the years of commitment and compassionate care they have provided to our patients and families.
“As a hospital board, our responsibility is to ensure that HRH can continue meeting the needs of our community—not only today, but well into the future,” said Board President, Matt Hummel. “We understand that change can be difficult, but this partnership is about ensuring our community continues to have access to the high-quality emergency care it deserves.”
Benefits of the Partnership with Rural Physicians Group:
Consistent, Reliable Coverage: RPG specializes in critical access and rural hospitals, offering full-time, dedicated providers who deliver continuity of care and improved patient outcomes.
24/7 Physician Oversight: RPG physicians will be available around the clock to provide guidance and direction for emergency and inpatient providers.
Consistency in Inpatient Care: RPG hospitalists will rotate in 5–7 day blocks, allowing continuity in patient monitoring and improved outcomes.
Dedicated Providers: Providers assigned to HRH will work exclusively at this facility, ensuring consistency and familiarity with our patients and staff.
Expanded Specialist Access: Through tele-specialist services, HRH patients will have access to cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, pulmonology, and critical care expertise—helping more patients receive the care they need close to home.
Operational Support: RPG will manage scheduling for ED providers, guaranteeing shift coverage at no additional cost to HRH.
This transition follows HRH’s separation from MercyOne and reflects the Board’s commitment to strengthening services while keeping more patients in the community. Current ED providers have been provided the contact information regarding employment opportunities with RPG.
“Our mission has always been to provide excellent, compassionate care close to home,” Hummel said. “Partnering with Rural Physicians Group ensures that HRH remains strong and able to serve our neighbors, family, and friends for years to come.”
